SIV Skincare: What Is Microbiome Skincare & Who Is It For?

What is SIV Skincare? Learn about the skin microbiome, Bacillus spores, microbiome-focused skincare and who SIV may be best for near Richmond, VA.

You’ve probably heard about the gut microbiome.

But did you know your skin has a microbiome too?

Your skin is home to a complex community of bacteria, fungi and other microorganisms that interact with your skin barrier and immune system.

And that growing area of research has led to an entirely new category of skincare:

microbiome-focused skincare.

At Adorn Society Aesthetics in Manakin-Sabot, Virginia, one of the microbiome-focused lines we carry is SIV, a professional skincare brand built around a live, spore-based serum designed to work alongside the skin's existing microbial environment.

So what does that actually mean—and is microbiome skincare right for everyone?

Let's break it down.

What Is the Skin Microbiome?

Your skin isn't sterile.

It naturally supports communities of microorganisms that vary depending on things like:

  • Skin location
  • Oil production
  • Moisture
  • pH
  • Environment
  • Age
  • Genetics
  • Skincare habits

These organisms interact with one another and with the skin itself.

A healthy skin microbiome is associated with normal barrier function and skin homeostasis.

Researchers are also studying how changes in the microbiome may relate to conditions such as acne, eczema and other inflammatory skin disorders.

But microbiome science is still developing.

We know the microbiome matters.

We're still learning exactly how to manipulate it safely and predictably through skincare.

What Is SIV Skincare?

SIV describes itself as a microbiome-first skincare brand.

Its hero product, the SIV Biome Balancing Serum, is unusual because it contains a proprietary blend of Bacillus spores rather than simply bacterial extracts or fermentation byproducts.

The current formula contains only four listed ingredients:

  • Squalane
  • Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride
  • Glyceryl Caprylate
  • A proprietary Bacillus spore blend

The first three ingredients help condition the skin and support moisture.

The Bacillus spores are what make SIV particularly different from most traditional skincare serums.

Are the Bacteria in SIV Actually Alive?

SIV uses Bacillus spores.

Spores are a dormant, highly resilient form that certain bacteria can produce to survive difficult conditions.

This is one reason spore-forming bacteria are particularly interesting for cosmetic formulations: they can remain stable in situations where many other live bacteria would be difficult to maintain.

SIV instructs users to shake the serum vigorously before each application because the spores naturally settle within the bottle.

Seeing particles or sediment is therefore normal for this particular formulation.

Is SIV a Probiotic or a Postbiotic?

This distinction matters.

A probiotic generally refers to live microorganisms that can provide a benefit when administered appropriately.

A postbiotic contains non-living microorganisms, microbial components or products derived from microbial activity.

SIV's topical serum contains Bacillus spores, so it is different from skincare products that contain only fermented extracts or non-living bacterial components.

That's one reason we shouldn't lump every “microbiome skincare” product into the same category.

They aren't necessarily doing the same thing.

What Is Quorum Sensing?

You may see SIV use the term quorum sensing.

It sounds complicated, but the concept itself is fascinating.

Quorum sensing is one way bacteria communicate with one another through chemical signals.

Those signals can influence behaviors within bacterial communities depending on how many organisms are present and what is happening within their environment.

SIV describes its Bacillus spores as interacting with the skin ecosystem through this type of microbial communication.

This is an interesting scientific concept—but it's also an area where skincare marketing can move faster than the clinical research.

So we prefer to say:

The biology behind microbial communication is real. Exactly how much a specific cosmetic serum can influence an individual's entire skin microbiome is still being studied.

What Does SIV Feel Like on the Skin?

The serum has a very simple, oil-like base.

Ingredients such as squalane and caprylic/capric triglyceride help soften the skin and reduce moisture loss without creating a heavy traditional cream texture.

SIV recommends applying 1–3 drops once daily after cleansing or toning.

Because the formula is so concentrated, you don't need much.

Who Might Like SIV?

SIV may be particularly appealing for someone interested in supporting overall skin balance rather than adding another aggressive corrective active.

It may fit into routines for skin that feels:

  • Dry or dehydrated
  • Easily irritated
  • Stressed
  • Acne-prone
  • Redness-prone
  • Over-exfoliated
  • Difficult to keep balanced

However, we don't consider SIV a treatment or cure for acne, rosacea, eczema or any other medical skin condition.

It is supportive skincare.

If you have a diagnosed or persistent skin disorder, medical treatment may still be necessary.

Can SIV Help Acne?

This is where careful wording matters.

The skin microbiome is actively being studied in acne, and microbial balance is clearly part of the acne conversation.

But SIV should not be presented as a replacement for established acne treatments such as:

  • Benzoyl peroxide
  • Topical retinoids
  • Salicylic acid
  • Prescription medications when needed

SIV has published very small internal microbiome testing suggesting changes in microbial populations after use of its serum.

That is interesting—but tiny exploratory testing is not the same as a large controlled clinical trial proving that the serum treats acne.

At Adorn, SIV may be incorporated as a supportive product within a larger acne routine when appropriate.

We still treat acne based on the individual skin and the evidence behind acne therapy.

What About Sensitive or Redness-Prone Skin?

This is another area where microbiome-supportive skincare can be interesting.

SIV's formula does not contain the traditional exfoliating acids or retinoids that often irritate highly reactive skin.

Its base also includes squalane and other emollient ingredients that help support moisture.

For someone whose skin feels overwhelmed by too many active ingredients, a simpler product may be appealing.

But sensitive skin is individual.

No skincare product is guaranteed to be non-irritating for every person.

Can You Use SIV With Retinol, Acids or Vitamin C?

SIV is designed to complement existing skincare rather than replace every other product in your routine.

That means it may be used alongside products such as:

  • Vitamin C
  • Retinoids
  • Acne products
  • Moisturizers
  • Sunscreen

But whether your skin should be using all of those things is a separate question.

If your routine already contains several strong active ingredients and your skin is irritated, adding another product—even a gentle one—isn't necessarily the first thing we need to do.

Sometimes we simplify first.

What About SIV After Professional Treatments?

Microbiome-focused skincare is an interesting area around aesthetic procedures, but post-procedure skin needs to be treated carefully.

After treatments such as:

  • Microneedling
  • Chemical peels
  • Dermaplaning
  • Corrective facials

follow the specific post-care instructions you receive from your provider.

Just because a product is described as soothing or microbiome supportive doesn't automatically mean it should be applied immediately after every procedure.

At Adorn, we'll tell you when and how to reintroduce your skincare based on the treatment performed.

Does Everyone Need Microbiome Skincare?

No.

The microbiome is important, but that doesn't mean everyone needs to purchase a dedicated microbiome serum.

A good skincare routine still begins with fundamentals:

Gentle cleansing.

Appropriate hydration.

Daily sunscreen.

Targeted treatment when necessary.

Microbiome-focused products can be an additional tool.

They're not a replacement for the basics.

Why We Carry SIV at Adorn

One reason we enjoy having SIV available is that not every client needs another acid, retinoid or corrective serum.

Sometimes the skin needs support.

SIV gives us an option that approaches skincare from a different direction—one focused on the skin ecosystem rather than aggressively exfoliating or stimulating the skin.

And it fits beautifully with one of our biggest philosophies:

Healthy skin before corrective skin.
